Many aspiring law students enroll in courses like Political Science, Philosophy, English, Economics, and History, as these are commonly believed to be the best pre-law courses in the Philippines. However, based on the admission policies of various law schools, any course is acceptable provided that the minimum number of units in certain subjects is met.
For the UP College of Law, applicants who are bachelor degree holders in fields other than the courses mentioned above must have 12 units of English, 9 units of History or Economics, 9 units of Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, or Sociology, and 3 units of Rizal.
For Ateneo Law School, applicants with a bachelor’s degree or higher must have 12 units of English and at least 3 units of Rizal.
For San Beda Law, applicants only need to have a bachelor’s degree in arts or sciences.
Lawyers have diverse backgrounds, and it is not unusual to meet compañeros and compañeras with undergraduate degrees in Accounting, Engineering, Medicine, or even Music. Their expertise in different fields often comes in handy when specializing in a particular field of law.
The best way to prepare for law school is to major in a course that you love while making sure that you take the subjects required by your law school of choice.
